Scotland's ICC Awards

The International Cricket Council have today (Thursday 26 January) announced the European winners of the Pepsi ICC Development Programme Awards 2011.  Cricket Scotland are proud to announce that they have won two categories; Best Junior Participation Initiative and Best Women’s Cricket Initiative

The Award for Best junior Participation initiative was for the 2011 Asda Primary School Kwik Cricket Competition that saw 503 Primary Schools taking part with 5075 pupils participating including 1700 girls. The competition has more than doubled in its three years from 234 schools in 2009.   The Scottish Parliament also recognised the success of the competition with two motions submitted during the summer of 2011.

The Award for Best Women’s Cricket Initiative was in recognition of the formation and management of the Women’s National League as well as general excellence in the development of all aspects of women and girls cricket to increase participation numbers in Scotland.

Steve Paige, Head of Community Development “I’m delighted that Cricket Scotland has been recognised by the ICC for the development initiatives.  These Awards are not just for Cricket Scotland but also reflect the huge amount of input from volunteers, teachers and Active Schools.  I’m grateful to Primary Schools competition sponsor Asda for the support they have provided throughout the year”.

Kari Carswell, Women’s Cricket Manager “Winning this award is absolutely fantastic and shows the huge amount of work that has gone on in the girls’ and women’s game over the past year.  A special thanks has to go to the clubs and all the volunteers who actively encourage girls to take part and have a women’s section.    The National League in 2011 was a huge success and we are seeking to build on the inaugural competition, allowing more girls and women the opportunity to play more often.”

ICC Regional Development Manager, Nick Pink commented: “The award winners reflect the great work that is happening across Europe in the ICC Pepsi Development Programme, with many different country winners and many others submitting some very good nominations. Each year the competition gets stronger and the winners deserve great credit and recognition for being selected and should be very proud of their achievements.”

Cricket Scotland now await the announcements of the global awards where they will be up against the other regional winners from across the globe.
